Shift: A Force of Change in the New World of Work - Part 1
Seth Mattison - AVDA
2016 Annual Conference Speaker
Every single day we drink from a fire hose
of information talking about our steady march towards this new-networked
world. Hyper connected and deeply empowering, it promises to usher in a
new area of work. Unfortunately this steady stream of information
creates a false narrative about the reality of today’s workplace. What’s
often left out of the commentary on the future of work is the fact that
the structures and more importantly the culture of the hierarchy is
still deeply embedded in our organizations and society today.
We’re living in a half changed world.

Independent Contractor or Employee? - Worker
misclassification has been a hot topic in the employment and legal arena
for several years. Recently the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in
California ruled that FedEx drivers were classified incorrectly and were
employees and not independent contractors. FedEx had classified its
drivers as independent contractors for about 10 years despite the fact
that their routes were assigned by the Company; the drivers reported to
FedEx managers; and the Company even provided their uniforms. The Court
ruled that the drivers were incorrectly classified as independent
contractors when they should have been employees.

on Fairness to Pet Owners Act (FTPO)
AVDA Lobbyist, Mark
Cushing, Tonkon, Torp, LLP
The early summer rumors of growing interest
in the Fairness to Pet Owners (FTPO) Act galvanized the industry and the
profession to hit Capitol Hill aggressively in August, September and
October. I worked with my co-lobbyist, Ashley Morgan, of AVMA and we
blanketed key committees in the House and
Senate during these three months.
In conversations with these committees we learned that FTPO’s proponents
did work the Hill in May and June and increased an initial level of
interest among some members of the committees. However, our core
supporters, particularly among the leadership, remain solid and the
potential swing supporters were open to hearing our side. These
conversations seemed to stem any summer momentum in favor of FTPO.
There is no interest or plan at committee or
subcommittee levels to hold a hearing on FTPO in either chamber this
year. We have growing confidence that we can keep FTPO off committee
calendars throughout 2016, with a basic level of maintenance and
outreach to committees in both House and Senate. Overall, we are in good
shape despite increased low level of ‘interest’ in the FTPO concept
earlier this year.
The Human Animal Bond Research Initiative (HABRI)
Foundation is picking up momentum in its efforts to share the importance
of pets to human health. A few weeks ago, HABRI issues its third
RFP seeing new research proposals. This comes on the heels of the
publication of the first
HABRI-funded research paper, with more on the way.
In September, HABRI supporters gathered in
Washington, DC to take our message to Capitol Hill. Pets make us
healthier, so public policy should support pet ownership. HABRI
co-sponsored Pet Night on Capitol Hill with the Animal health Institute,
which was well-attended by members of Congress and their staff.
All of this activity is getting some
positive attention. The Federal government now recognizes HABRI’s
expertise, with the new
CDC website pointing to HABRI a key resource on the human-animal

Update from AVMA on Ketamine and World Health Organization
The Thirty-seventh Expert Committee on Drug
Dependence (ECDD) of the WHO
will meet November 16-20 to review a number of substances (including ketamine) with potential for dependence, abuse and harm to health, and
will make recommendations to the U.N. Secretary-General, on the need for
and level of international control of these substances. As you know, ketamine is classified as a rapid acting general anesthetic agent used
for short diagnostic and surgical procedures that do not require
skeletal muscle relaxation. It is marketed in the United States as an
injectable product for medical and veterinary use. Ketamine is
controlled in Schedule III of the CSA in the United States.

BRAND NEW! Becoming a
Digital Distributor: Strategies and Tools that Create Value
Digital tools are changing the way we work
just as they have already changed the way we live. Unfortunately, it’s
been more by happenstance than design for some businesses today. The
digitalization of the distribution channel is inevitable because change
is happening up and down the value chain. If your business is not
leading, then at the very least, you must keep up. Up until now,
however, there has been very little guidance for distributors about
where to start and how to strategically use digital tools—e-commerce,
social media, mobility, CRM, advanced analytics, and multichannel
solutions—to gain a competitive advantage. That is about to change.
